‘Tis the season for camping.
If you live with anxiety and are struggling with sleep, tent camping is a great way to help reset your circadian rhythm.
Your circadian rhythm is your sleep-wake cycle that repeats roughly every 24 hours. During this cycle, you have a shift in the hormones cortisol and melatonin.
Cortisol is highest in the mornings and then wanes throughout the day. It’s your get-up-and-go hormone, and this is why it’s important to expose your eyes to sunlight first thing in the morning.
Melatonin, on the other hand, is highest at night. It gets released in the evening to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
When your eyes are exposed to light, there’s a reduction in melatonin and an increase in cortisol. Hence why, you should shut off the TV and put down the phone before bedtime.
So why tent camping? Well, I say tent because RVs bring all the artificial light with them. If you struggle with sleep, get back to your roots and sleep under the stars. It’s a great way to help reset your circadian rhythm naturally.
Melatonin will naturally release as the sun sets and the moon rises. Cortisol will kick in as the darkness drifts away and the sun starts to kiss the sky (I’m an absolute sucker for sunrises). Do this for a few nights and see if you notice an improvement (Obviously, it won’t help if you go back home and jump into all your old habits.).
Hope this was helpful.
Happy camping.
